51% Cabernet Franc, 33% Merlot, 16% Petit Verdot

The 2013 version of THE SMUGGLER is surely the most impressive cabernet franc-based wine made to date by Ruby Trust. The purity, the focus, and the way the wine plays across the palate makes it a real high-wire act. Cabernet francrarely lends itself to either elegance or completeness as a varietal, which is why it’s often a minor player in blends. But here, as 51% of the cuvée, it steals the show (with a little help from its friends merlot, at 33%, and petit verdot, at 16%)—and it’s razzle-dazzle all the way. Effusive aromas of ripe blackberries and black cherries mingle with hints of roasted coffee, brown spices, white pepper, sandalwood, graphite and chocolate. The palate is a luxurious riot of dark fruits, baking spices, cola, tobacco leaf, and vanilla, framed by fine aacidity and supple tannins, with an implicit sweetness rarely found. Intriguing notes of mocha linger sensuously in the finish. —The Rocky Mountain Herald

58% Petit Verdot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot

The fifth release of FORTUNE SEEKER is the only bottling in Ruby Trust’s portfolio that the winery has produced each year since its founding—and with good reason: The wine is plush and juicy, yet racy and expressive, reflecting both the character of its com-position and the winery’s bracing style. The 2013—an alluring, sophisticated blend of petit verdot (58%), cabernet sauvignon (25%), and merlot (17%)—ladles up gorgeous aromas of ripe plum and dark berry fruit along with touches of graphite, cedar, anise, blueberry liqueur, tobacco leaf, and toasted vanilla that expand as they envelop the sen-ses. The opulent flavors, echoing the aromas, are seamless and forceful without being overpowering—providing an opulent texture that would pair beautiffully with black pepper-crusted rib-eye steaks. —The Rocky Mountain Herald

37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 26% Syrah

The 2013 vintage marks the return of BANDITS PASS to the Ruby Trust lineup for the first time since the winery’s inaugural harvest in 2009, and for lovers of Bordeaux-style blends with a twist, this is the ticket. The cuvée consists of equal amounts (37%) of cab-ernet sauvignon and merlot, with the balance (26%) in syrah. Aromatically, the wine rocks, serving up essences of dark plum and blackberry fruit, with jazzy hints of white pepper, cedar, and spice. On the palate, the aromas transition to wonderfully deep, vital flavors of boysenberry and pepper along with splashes of pipe tobacco, mocha, and truffle—all nicely framed by juicy acidity and the kind of plush tannins that provide just the right degree of structural grip. Soft oak adds notes of toastedvanilla on the finish, but it doesn’t overwhelm. In short, the wine is truly greater than the sum of its parts—and its parts are pretty awesome in their own right. —The Rocky Mountain Herald

82% Syrah, 18% Petit Verdot

Syrah is a latecomer to the list of great grape varieties in America. Despite interest in the 1970s from a handful of winemakers, it wasn’t until the late ‘80s that this powerful Rhône grape began to take off. Today, the plantings ofsyrah across the West are pro-ducing wines that balance intense berry flavors against savory pepper and spice notes. With its enticing aromas and flavors of raspberry, black cherry, black tea, white pepper, mountain herbs and spices, Ruby Trust’s 2013 GUNSLINGER—a blend of 82% syrah and 18% petit verdot—is a wine to spend an evening getting to know. GUNSLINGER has a plush, meaty texture in the mouth, especially the mid-palate, with just enough tannic astringency to give the wine some size without hampering its drinkability. The result is a sensational, complex, broad, savory, mouthfilling yet beautifully-balanced red that will improve with a year or two in the bottle.—The Rocky Mountain Herald

56% Syrah, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Petit Verdot

Ruby Trust’s 2013 STRANGLEHOLD, its first-ever release of the wine (an intriguing blend of 56% syrah and 22% each of cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot), displays elements of black cherry, plum, black raspberry, mocha, spice, pepper, and vanilla that burst from the glass, making it an intense, expansive offering loaded with character. Wood smoke, tobacco, licorice and a host of earthier, gamier notes develop in the glass (along with a suggestionof garrigue that’s reminiscent of Mediterranean France), but the wine remains distinctly big, rich and fruit-driven in style. STRANGLEHOLD would certainly benefit from bottle-age for a couple of years, but it’s already pretty special. A most versatile wine, it’s a fine match for an exotic menu featuring savory, wild mush-rooms and roasted meats. —The Rocky Mountain Herald
